Use Yesterday’s News® Every Day
Training
As early as 4 weeks, most kittens feel the urge to dig in material, like Yesterday’s News®, and will instinctively choose that as the place for elimination. Often, their mothers have trained them to do so.
First, place the litter box in a quiet, confined area and make sure your kitten can easily climb in and out of it at will. Watch the kitten closely for signs that he’s ready to relieve himself, such as nosing in corners or squatting. Usually, it will be soon after he wakes up or finishes eating. Gently place him in the box and scratch the kitten’s front paws in the litter, so he learns that it is the place to deposit and bury waste. But do not startle or interfere with your kitten as he’s actually using the litter box or he may develop an aversion to it. If he has an accident, wipe it up with a paper towel and place it in the litter box to remind him that it is the proper place to go. When he’s just used the litter box successfully, lavish him with praise and a food treat! Then, clean the litter as soon as possible. As always, having a meticulously clean litter box is very important to your cat.
